The last Confederate state to leave the Union and the first to return, Tennessee was deeply divided during the Civil War. Tennessee Valley Authority reflects some of the contributions made to today's America.

The state capital, at Nashville since 1826, has its state house built almost entirely form native stone. The cornerstone was laid July 4, 1845, and completed in 1859 at a cost of approximately 1.5 million dollars.
